By Kushan Randeni Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, the mother of Modern Couture; also known to the world as "Coco Chanel". She's still remembered by her witty character, bob cut and her timeless jewellery coupled with her very own Chanel suit. Gabrielle Chanel was born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France. After her mother died (When Gabrielle was 11) she and her 2 sisters, Julia and Antoinette Chanel was dropped off at the orphanage -Aubazine Abbey in Correze, France by her father, who was a peddler. Here's a list of 7 things you didn't know about the most famous fashion designer of the 20th Century, Coco Chanel; 1. Nuns taught her how to sew Nuns who ran the Aubazine Abbey taught her how to sew and every other thing relating to the sewing trade. which sparked an interest towards fashion within the little Chanel. 2. She got the nickname 'Coco' from 2 songs she used to perform After she left Abbey, she used to perform at a Moulin-rouge style cabaret which was frequented by cavalry officers. Her male admirers called her 'Coco' based on the two popular songs with which they remembered her performances by, “Ko Ko Ri Ko”, and “Qui qu’a vu Coco”. 3. She lied about her age and place of birth For years, Madam Channel claimed she was born in 1893 instead of 1883- making her 10 years younger. But not for the reason you think, she did it to diminish the awful stigma of her beginnings of poverty, illegitimacy and orphanhood. 4. Coco Chanel was once pregnant But she decided to get an abortion. However, the abortion was botched, which left Chanel infertile. 5.Chanel's first taste of clothing success came from a dress she fashioned out of an old jersey on a chilly day After seeing her wearing that dress, many women asked her where she got it, which motivated her to open 2 other stores in Deauville and Biarritz which was focused on making Haute couture. She once said in an interview with author Paul Morand that "My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville.” 6. Coco Chanel was never married However, she had many lovers. Etienne Balsan, Arthur Edward ‘Boy’ Capel, Grand Duke Dmitri and the most controversial of them all was her relationship with a German soldier called Hans Gunther von Dincklage during WWII, which resulted in her being exiled to Switzerland. 7.Her perfume 'CHANEL N°5' was the first perfume to carry a designer's name A perfume that revolutionized the world of luxury perfumes, she always said CHANEL N°5 is a "Woman's perfume with a woman's scent". Perfume is as important as clothes, a woman she said should wear perfume where ever she would like to be kissed. From 1921 to this date, CHANEL N°5 still remains as one of the best-selling perfumes in the world. It was named 'N°5' (Number 5) because it was the 5th sample that was presented to Madam Chanel. Many people say she had an obsession with no 05, she believed no 5 brought luck to her. CHANEL N°5 resists the whims of fashion and the passage of time as if Mademoiselle Chanel had found the formula for the feminine eternity.
